🎯Year 6 SATs Preparation
Year 6 pupils take the national SATs tests in May. Our tests provide fresh practice papers (not recycled past papers) to ensure genuine exam preparation.
What is Key Stage 2?
Key Stage 2 covers Years 3 to 6 in English primary schools (ages 7-11). The maths curriculum builds on KS1 foundations, developing fluency with arithmetic, fractions, decimals, and introduces algebra, ratio and more complex geometry.
At the end of Year 6, pupils take the national SATs tests (KS2 Maths SATs), which include an arithmetic paper and two reasoning papers. Results are used for secondary school placement and national benchmarking.
Why MathQuizily?
KS2 Maths Practice: Build Confidence from Year 3 to SATs
Key Stage 2 is a critical stage in every child's maths journey. Spanning four years of primary school, KS2 maths takes pupils from basic multiplication and simple fractions in Year 3 through to algebra, ratio, and multi-step problem solving by the end of Year 6. Regular practice with curriculum-aligned questions is the single most effective way to build fluency and confidence.
The KS2 Maths Curriculum Year by Year
In Year 3, children secure their understanding of place value to 1,000, learn written methods for addition and subtraction, and begin to multiply and divide using the 3, 4, and 8 times tables. Fractions are introduced on number lines, and measurement extends to include perimeter. Year 4 is a pivotal year: children are expected to know all times tables up to 12 × 12 by heart, and they take the national Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) in June. Decimals appear for the first time as tenths and hundredths, and children begin calculating area. Year 5 extends place value to one million, introduces long multiplication and short division, and develops understanding of equivalent fractions, percentages, and volume. By Year 6, the full curriculum comes together — pupils tackle long division, convert between fractions, decimals, and percentages, work with ratio and proportion, encounter simple algebra, and solve complex multi-step reasoning problems in preparation for the KS2 SATs.
KS2 SATs: What Parents Need to Know
The KS2 SATs take place every May and are the most significant national tests in primary education. Year 6 pupils sit three papers: an Arithmetic paper (30 minutes, 40 marks) and two Reasoning papers (40 minutes each, 35 marks each). Raw marks are converted to a scaled score where 100 represents the expected standard and 110 or above indicates greater depth. SATs results follow children to secondary school and are used for national benchmarking. The best preparation is consistent, regular practice throughout Year 6 — and ideally from Year 5 onwards — rather than a last-minute cramming effort in the spring term.
Why Practise with MathQuizily?
MathQuizily generates fresh KS2 maths tests on demand, tailored to each year group and topic. Unlike recycled past papers, our AI creates unique questions every time, so children never simply memorise answers. Each test includes a full mark scheme with worked solutions, making it easy for parents and teachers to support learning at home or in the classroom. The questions are carefully calibrated to match curriculum expectations for each year group, ensuring your child is practising at the right level of challenge.
For Teachers
Create printable KS2 maths assessments in minutes. Whether you need a quick arithmetic starter, a full reasoning paper, or targeted practice on fractions and decimals, MathQuizily saves hours of worksheet preparation. Tests are downloaded as clean, print-ready PDFs with separate answer sheets. Generate multiple versions of the same test to reduce copying in class, or create differentiated papers for children working at different levels. Many year teams use MathQuizily for weekly assessments, half-termly tests, and mock SATs, ensuring a steady supply of fresh material throughout the academic year.
For Parents
Help your child prepare for end-of-year assessments or KS2 SATs with professional-quality practice papers. The worked solutions show every step, so you can guide your child even if primary maths methods have changed since you were at school. Short, regular practice sessions — 15 to 20 minutes, three to four times per week — are far more effective than occasional marathon sessions. Focus on topics your child finds difficult, and celebrate progress rather than perfection.
The Multiplication Tables Check in Year 4
Since 2022, all Year 4 pupils in England take the statutory Multiplication Tables Check (MTC). Children have six seconds to answer each of 25 multiplication questions, testing recall of tables up to 12 × 12. Strong times table knowledge is essential not just for the check itself but for every area of maths that follows — division, fractions, algebra, and beyond. MathQuizily Year 4 tests include plenty of times table practice alongside other curriculum topics, helping children build the fluency they need.
Affordable Practice With No Subscription
At just £0.80 per test with no subscription required, MathQuizily is the affordable way to support your child's maths learning throughout primary school. Create a test, download the PDF, and print it at home or school in under 60 seconds. Every test is unique, every test includes answers, and every test is aligned to the UK national curriculum.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Key Stage 2 maths?
Key Stage 2 (KS2) is the phase of education for children in Years 3 to 6 (ages 7-11) in England. The KS2 maths curriculum covers number and place value, the four operations, fractions, decimals, percentages, measurement, geometry, and statistics. At the end of Year 6, pupils sit the national KS2 SATs tests in arithmetic and mathematical reasoning.
What are KS2 SATs maths papers?
KS2 SATs maths consists of three papers: Paper 1 (Arithmetic, 30 minutes, 40 marks), Paper 2 (Reasoning, 40 minutes, 35 marks), and Paper 3 (Reasoning, 40 minutes, 35 marks). The tests assess the full KS2 maths curriculum and results contribute to the school's performance data.
How can I help my child prepare for KS2 maths?
Regular practice with age-appropriate maths questions is the most effective preparation. MathQuizily generates KS2 maths tests for each year group, with topics matched to the national curriculum. Practising little and often builds confidence and fluency, especially in arithmetic and reasoning.
Can MathQuizily generate KS2 maths tests?
Yes. MathQuizily generates KS2 maths tests for Years 3, 4, 5, and 6, plus dedicated SATs practice papers. Each test is aligned to the UK National Curriculum, includes worked answers, and is downloadable as a printable PDF. Tests cost just £0.80 each.
What topics are covered in Year 6 maths?
Year 6 maths covers place value to 10 million, long division, fractions/decimals/percentages, ratio and proportion, algebra, coordinates, area/perimeter/volume, angles, statistics, and problem solving. These topics are all assessed in the KS2 SATs.
