What is Key Stage 2?

Key Stage 2 covers Years 3 to 6 in English primary schools (ages 7-11). The maths curriculum builds on KS1 foundations, developing fluency with arithmetic, fractions, decimals, and introduces algebra, ratio and more complex geometry.

At the end of Year 6, pupils take the national SATs tests (KS2 Maths SATs), which include an arithmetic paper and two reasoning papers. Results are used for secondary school placement and national benchmarking.

Year 5 extends place value to one million, introduces long multiplication and short division, and develops understanding of equivalent fractions, percentages, and volume. By Year 6, the full curriculum comes together — pupils tackle long division, convert between fractions, decimals, and percentages, work with ratio and proportion, encounter simple algebra, and solve complex multi-step reasoning problems in preparation for the KS2 SATs.

KS2 SATs: What Parents Need to Know

The KS2 SATs take place every May and are the most significant national tests in primary education. Year 6 pupils sit three papers: an Arithmetic paper (30 minutes, 40 marks) and two Reasoning papers (40 minutes each, 35 marks each). Raw marks are converted to a scaled score where 100 represents the expected standard and 110 or above indicates greater depth. SATs results follow children to secondary school and are used for national benchmarking. The best preparation is consistent, regular practice throughout Year 6 — and ideally from Year 5 onwards — rather than a last-minute cramming effort in the spring term.
